Bamboo Living Homes and the Kahua Hawaiian Institute will sponsor a day long celebration of the Bambhuddist way of life with music food and gourmet shoots prepared Hawaiian style. There will also be a premier showing of the recently completed documentary…Dance of Earth and Spirit http://thedanceofearthandspirit.com/, an inspirational story of attaining peace through cooperation with nature and bamboo.

This production is a journey through 20 years of devotion to 15 acres of land in the creation of a sustainable community built around a bamboo spirit and farm. This is the location of the first certified and permitted bamboo structure in the western world. It includes footage of the assembly and construction process for the first 8 prototypes designed and built by Bamboo Living homes.

The celebrations will include traditional Hawaiian cultural recognition of the Aloha Spirit and a prayer of gratitude to all those who supported us in creating this community of Bambhudda’s.

WBD at Auroville Bamboo Centre, Tamil Nadu, India

To commemorate World Bamboo Day 2011, the Auroville Bamboo Research Centre is planning a celebration of bamboo in the international township of Auroville, South India.  Special events will include:

·         Bamboo Day Market.  A bamboo market featuring furniture, jewellery , musical instruments, beauty products, and home wares made from bamboo; a bamboo coffee lounge; farmers’ market; bamboo handicraft demonstrations; children’s corner featuring toys made from bamboo; music from The Bamboo Band.

·         Bamboo Evening.  A sumptuous feast at the Auroville Visitors’ Centre featuring edible bamboo.  Dinner will be served to the dulcet sounds of a classical Indian flautist, playing a bamboo flute of course!  A fashion show featuring designs in bamboo cloth will provide diners with entertainment and further inspiration regarding the potential of this versatile plant.  Music from The Bamboo Band will have people dancing into the night.

·         Bamboo Schools.  The schools of Auroville are invited to participate in a weeklong celebration of bamboo leading up to World Bamboo Day 2011.  Primary school aged children will be treated to an informative presentation of the unique properties of bamboo, its environmental importance as well as construction and craft uses during a visit to the Auroville Bamboo Research Centre where children will be able to see bamboo being turned into houses, furniture and toys.  On the final school day of this week, a bamboo planting ceremony involving the children of Auroville will be held.

·         Bamboo Lecture Series.  Children and adults from the community of Auroville are invited to a series of three lectures in the Auroville Town Hall in the week leading to World Bamboo Day 2011.  Topics covered include the bamboo and the natural environment, bamboo construction, and bamboo artistry and craft.

The Auroville Bamboo Research Centre is a non-profit organisation committed to generating awareness of environmentally sustainable applications of bamboo through research and education.  Located in Auroville, Tamil Nadu, the Auroville Bamboo Research Centre embodies the principles of research and sustainable living espoused by the eco community in which it is situated.  Since its inception the Centre has strived to create a place in which students, researchers, artisans, builders and anyone with a serious or casual interest can learn about bamboo and its uses as well as work towards new and innovative applications of this most environmentally sound material.

As well as a research centre, the Auroville Bamboo Research Centre manufactures bamboo products for sale within the community and further afield.  Current product lines include furniture, musical instruments, jewellery, soaps, household products and fabric for clothing.  Using bamboo as a construction material is also an integral part of the work of the Centre which acts in a consulting capacity on local building sites and offers training to architects and builders from around India and the world.  Employing people from local villages around Auroville, the centre strives to support and revitalise the communities in which it is located while serving both domestic and global markets that demand high-quality, eco-friendly bamboo merchandise.

A naturally fun way to learn about bamboo for children will be offered at a one day toy DIY class at the Hape bamboo toy factory set in the companies’ bamboo forest outside Ningbo. In conjunction with a group of design students from German Bauhaus University and China Academy of Arts visiting for an intensive bamboo toy design workshop, the children will have a lot of fun designing their own toys, and also learn a lot about bamboo as a plant and as a production material under the professional guidance of Hape’s skilled craftsmen and the students. There will also be a group effort in building a big bamboo raft, to launch onto the beautiful, clean lake on-site. The event will be outside in the middle of the bamboo forest the whole day. For the parents and interested adults, there will be information on the sustainability of bamboo as a plant and as a resource, to raise public awareness. The celebration consists of an entire Bamboo Weekend in a Bamboo Village, called Bam’boosing the future with World Bamboo Day on Sunday.

The goal is to promote bamboo as a sustainable resource for the future.

Friday: VIP Opening reception (speech by the mayor of Ghent)

Saturday: concerts of Ode Gand in the main bamboo dome / big music festival in Ghent.

Sunday: World bamboo Day, together with the event ‘Carless Sunday’: all the activities will start in the bamboo village.

Followed by an educational seminar on Monday in Antwerp.
