This past week brought about celebrations around the world in the name of bamboo. An abundant natural resource which continues to be utilized by man in thousands of ways, to be home and food for millions of living creatures, as well as an inherent instrument for a healthy environment, bamboo is moving away from the unfair misnomer of “poor man’s timber” and onto a brighter future for everyone concerned.

Leaders of the APSSOL Indigenous People (IP) Association in Benguet, Philippines together with officials of the MAP-PCAFI-EARTH-led Private-Public Partnership Program that promotes the use of bamboo for greening and sustainability pose for a souvenir photo before planting bamboo propagules on World Bamboo Day. The propagules are for the bambusetum of the first satellite center of the APSSOL EARTH ECO-PARK SYSTEM, the first eco-park system focused on bamboo in the Philippines. The group includes the following officials standing in the background: Bamboo Specialist Forester Fatima Tangan (2nd from left), APSSOL President Adam Ventura (3rd from left), EARTH Institute Asia President Dr. Cora Claudio (4th from left), and APSSOL member-landowner Wilson Banoan Waguis (5th from left.)

This is exactly the GOAL of World Bamboo Day……. to elevate the status of bamboo everywhere, to be considered as a plant with amazing potentials to help people, to improve the environment, as a positive substitute to other materials – such as a source for bio-plastic, bio-fuel, and non-timber products.

To learn more about these very important issues, we encourage you to attend the 9th World Bamboo Congress in April 2012 held in Antwerp, Belgium. www.worldbamboocongress.org

The 2011 World Bamboo Day activities in Benguet province of the Philippines include bamboo planting inside the Philex Mining Corporation, the publicly-listed operator of the Padcal gold mine in the Philippines, a consistent silver awardee in the Philippine Corporate Governance Scorecard Annual Awards. Through the initial planting of 2,000 pyllostachys aurea, Philex formally joined the bamboo for greening and sustainability of the PPP Program. The company has also actively supported the training on bamboo of APSSOL members. Shown in the photo is one of the planting teams composed of employees of Philex, members of the APSSOL IP community, and forestry students of the Benguet State University. Each member of the Best Planting Team based on teamwork, proper planting procedures, and other factors received gift packs from Unilever Philippines, one of the companies that supported the World Bamboo Day Celebration of the PPP Program.

This production is a journey through 20 years of devotion to 15 acres of land in the creation of a sustainable community built around a bamboo spirit and farm. This is the location of the first certified and permitted bamboo structure in the western world. It includes footage of the assembly and construction process for the first 8 prototypes designed and built by Bamboo Living homes.
